Dancing through Development

Written by Sean Yauk

On March 1st of this year, 4Score launched the 'Dance of the Fox' concept album on all major music streaming sites. Since then, we've been able to share the work in development with hundreds of listeners around the globe! It's been a real exciting time.

The original concept album is only the first step in our development process for this work.

Many have been asking us how Dance of the Fox began, and what it is about. The idea originated from a series of spam emails that were received from escort agencies. The emails were making a direct appeal to the recipient for virtual and in-person escort services. The subject matter fascinated us, and the text in the emails was lyrical and empowering! Junk mail - who'd have thought!?

We were inspired to learn more about the work that high profile escorts actually do. So, I took it upon myself to consult with several of them (virtually due to COVID 19 restrictions that had come in to place) over the course of many months. It was an enlightening experience!

The first thing I learned was that there are many barriers to navigate in Canada for professional sex workers and escorts. Federal laws make it illegal for anyone to purchase sexual services in this country. This continues to put sex workers in a vulnerable position, where their health and safety are at risk.

In March of 2020, hundreds of sex worker advocates came together to advocate for decriminalization and protection of sex workers in Canada. A Claim was filed a year later by a group of advocates challenging the country's prostitution laws on constitutional grounds https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/sex-trade-legal-challenge-canada-1.5969798

In addition to the legal barriers that they face, I learned that most escorts take great pride in the work that they do. and consider themselves to be valuable members of the tertiary sector of the economy. One said that their practice is built on empowerment and artistry, rather than subjugation to clients.

Third thing that I learned was that shaping the mood through lighting, sounds/music, and smells/aromas is as important to an escort's practice as any physical acts. Artistry and theatre are involved in making a client feel comfortable.

With this new information learned and the email offers from escorts on hand, I attempted to write a score based loosely on the life and times of escorts. I focused on getting empowerment, dignity, and directness across through the lyrics. The music was influenced by rock, jazz, soul, and early 2000s pop, giving it a distinct flare.

After working with a talented group of singers and musicians and audio engineers, the first concept album came to life!

And that brings us to where the work is today. Currently, we're working on an expanded concept album with more music, more statements, and more storytelling. In addition to that, the creative team is growing. We're exploring mediums of presentation such as live theatre, an indie film, and a musical podcast, and are excited for what the future holds.

If you haven't already, you can listen to the album on Spotify, Apple Music, and many more streaming platforms.

We'll continue to do our research and share updates with you through the 4Score blogspot as things progress.
